RNG Hits EU Milestone

Lithuania’s gas transmission system operator Amber Grid has officially connected to the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB) Hub, enabling the exchange of guarantees of origin (GOs) for renewable gases across European member states.

This milestone strengthens Amber Grid’s efforts to expand the biomethane market and create conditions for Lithuanian producers to export biomethane internationally, while also allowing imports from other EU countries. The integration was supported by Grexel Systems Oy, Finland’s guarantees of origin registry service provider, with whom Amber Grid signed a service agreement earlier this year.

From now on, guarantees of origin issued in Lithuania under the European Energy Certificate System (EECS) will be transferable via the AIB Hub. Membership in the AIB Gas Scheme Group ensures harmonized rules for GO issuance and facilitates cross-border trading of renewable gases throughout the EU.

“Joining the AIB Hub allows for smooth and efficient transfer of EECS guarantees of origin between European countries. Our goal is to create favorable conditions for the export and import of green gases for Lithuanian market participants. This achievement promotes biogas development and benefits Lithuania’s economy,” said Nemunas Biknius, CEO of Amber Grid.

Amber Grid became an official member of the AIB Gas Scheme Group in August 2025 after its gas sector protocol was approved. The protocol defines rules for administering internationally compliant guarantees of origin for renewable gases.

As part of the Gas Scheme Group, Amber Grid will contribute to shaping the European GO system and related regulations. Other members include ENAGAS GTS (Spain), E-Control (Austria), Conexus Baltic Grid (Latvia), Gasgrid Finland, OTE (Czech Republic), Pronovo (Switzerland), and Verticer (Netherlands).
