Burckhardt Compression will provide two 2B2X-1.31 make-up gas compressors, driven by 1400 hp (1044 kW) fixed speed electric motors, for ExxonMobil’s Beaumont Light Atmospheric Distillation Expansion Project. The expansion project at ExxonMobil’s Beaumont, Texas, USA, refinery includes a new 55 KBD diesel hydrotreater and will allow for refining of light crude oil from the Permian Basin in West Texas and New Mexico, USA.
The multi-stage reciprocating compressors, designed and engineered by Burckhardt Compression, guarantee a continuous compression and delivery of more than 13,000 SCFM (368 m3/h) of hydrogen gas at a pressure of more than 1000 psi (68 bar). The hydrogen make-up gas compressor systems include electric motor drive, skid-mounted oil system, and skid-mounted water console.
“Burckhardt Compression’s Process Gas Compressors are designed to meet API 618 guidelines and higher specifications applicable to the refinery industry,” said Jay Hedlund, North America Market & Applications Manager at Burckhardt. “They are able to handle the most demanding and complex applications. Our compressors can be found in applications with a range up to 14,500 psi (999 bar) lubricated and 7250 psi (499 bar) non-lubricated discharge pressure. The compressor, designed in Switzerland, and assembled in Texas, is optimized to the customer’s process conditions in order to achieve longest possible lifetime and highest level of reliability.”
In total, the project will add four new units — atmospheric pipe still, kerosene hydrotreater, diesel hydrotreater, and benzene recovery — that will be integrated into the existing facilities at the refinery.
The Beaumont refinery currently has the capacity to process 365,000 bpd and produces 2.8 billion gallons of gasoline annually. The Beaumont complex also includes a chemicals plant, a polyethylene plant, and a lube plant.
ExxonMobil has estimated the total post-expansion capacity for the Beaumont refinery to be between 700,000 bpd and 850,000 bpd, making it the largest refinery in North America.
