Baker Hughes will supply three NovaLT12 gas turbine driven compressor trains for a new gas compressor station in Sulmona, Italy. Snam, an Italy-based energy infrastructure company, issued the contract as part of its Adriatic Line, a pipeline project that includes the construction of a 265 mile (425 km), hydrogen-ready pipeline. The project, upon completion in 2027, will allow the transport of additional energy supplies from Azerbaijan, Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean region to northern Europe.
Snam announced the US$3.7 billion project in 2022. The company currently operates a natural gas transmission network that spans 20,360 miles (32,767 km) and includes 13 compressor stations, nine points of entry into Europe’s National Network for imported gas, 600 Bcf (17 x 109 m3) of storage capacity, and one regasification terminal.
The adoption of Baker Hughes NovaLT12 turbines, which provide the option to run on 100% natural gas or hydrogen blends up to 10%, aligns with Snam’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality on direct emissions by 2040.
