Baker Hughes will supply three gas compression units to San Matias Pipeline S.A. for a major natural gas pipeline project in Argentina. The order consists of three NovaLT16 gas turbines equipped with three centrifugal compressors, along with commissioning services, spare parts, special tools, and remote monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.
This equipment will be installed at a gas compressor station near Allen, Río Negro, to support the transportation of natural gas from the Vaca Muerta formation to the Gulf of San Matias through a dedicated pipeline, providing feed gas to Southern Energy’s two floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels.
Southern Energy S.A. is an Argentine energy company created to develop LNG export projects from Argentina to international markets, mainly Europe and Asia. Founded in 2024 and is headquartered in Buenos Aires, the company is made up of Pan American Energy (30%), YPF (25%), Pampa Energia (20%), Harbour Energy (15%), and Golar LNG (10%).
Permitting work is underway for a planned Argentine LNG feed gas pipeline that spans 293 miles (473 km) and forms part of the Southern Energy floating LNG project, which involves mooring two floating liquefaction vessels off the coast of Río Negro province and building associated supply infrastructure. Total LNG production capacity is 6 MTPA.
The pipeline is designed to transport up to 998 MMscf/d (28 x 106 m3/d).
Work on the pipeline is scheduled to begin in May 2026 and conclude in April 2028. The project marks the first utilization of Baker Hughes’ NovaLT gas turbine technology in South America.
