Vinton Dome Storage Hub LLC (Vinton Dome) has requested FERC authorization for its Vinton Dome Project, a large-scale underground natural gas storage development in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana.
The Vinton Dome Storage Hub’s (VDSH’s) initial phase includes the construction of five storage caverns, a compressor station, and associated pipeline infrastructure connecting the facility to multiple existing and planned interstate natural gas transmission systems.
When complete, the first phase is expected to provide approximately 44.5 bcf (1.2 x 109 m3) of working gas capacity. The VDSH is intended to provide high-turn, high-deliverability storage services through the injection, storage, and withdrawal of natural gas from underground salt caverns. Gas withdrawn from storage would be delivered into interconnected interstate pipeline systems.
The project’s design calls for peak daily injection capacity of up to 2 bcf/d (56.6 x 106 m3/d) and peak daily withdrawal capability of up to 2.75 bcf/d (77.8 x 106 m3/d). Vinton Dome plans to establish bidirectional interconnections with multiple interstate pipeline systems serving the Gulf Coast market.
A new 55,000-hp (41,030 kW) bidirectional compressor station will house 10 Caterpillar 3616 natural engines, each rated at 5500 hp (4103 kW), driving Ariel compressors. The compressor station is designed to support both injection and withdrawal operations.
The storage hub’s pipeline network will originate at the Calcasieu Parish storage facility and extend north toward an area northeast of Starks, Louisiana, while an eastern route will connect toward Carlyss, Louisiana. These facilities are intended to create access to the region’s interstate pipeline grid and expanding liquefied natural gas export infrastructure.
