More Compression Planned For Algeria’s Alrar Gas Field

China Petroleum Engineering Corp. (CPECC) was awarded a contract by Sonatrach for the construction of new boosting units in the Alrar gas field, located in Algeria’s Illizi Basin. CPECC will provide the engineering, procurement, and construction for three compressor trains, the modification of the intake and inlet separation manifolds at the level of the slug catchers, the installation of booster pumps, tie-ins with existing installations and utilities, and remote monitoring systems. The contract also includes the construction of an electrical substation and the upgrade of existing integrated control and safety systems.

The project is needed to boost pressure and maintain production of the Alrar gas field at 353 MMscf/d (10 x 106 m3/d). The compressor trains are expected to begin service in 2027.

“This project represents Sonatrach’s determination and commitment to continue its investment in the upstream segment of gas projects to meet the growing demand in the national market,” said Sonatrach Chair and CEO Rachid Hachichi. “This will enable Sonatrach to manage the natural decline in production at the Alrar gas field, which has been operational since 1984, and continue its production. It will also allow Sonatrach to fulfill its commercial commitments to its customers in the international market, where Algeria plays an important role.”
