Golden Triangle Storage LLC (GTS) has filed an application with the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commision (FERC) requesting authorization for its Spindletop Expansion Project. GTS is proposing to expand its existing natural gas storage facilities, which occupy a 90-acre (36 ha) tract near Beaumont, Texas. GTS is currently constructing the GTS Expansion Project, a separate project, which includes the development and operation of two new salt dome natural gas storage caverns (Cavern 3 and Cavern 4) and associated facilities, an additional 33,000 hp (24,618 kW) of spark-ignited reciprocating piston engine driven compression, and a new brine disposal well and pipeline (see “Contracts & Permits,” November 2023 Gas Compression Magazine, p.4).
The Spindletop Expansion Project will add approximately 30.75 bcf (870.7 x 106 m3/d) of new natural gas storage capacity to the existing storage facilities by adding four underground natural gas storage caverns (caverns 9, 10, 11, and 12) to its existing storage facility. These additional caverns will increase the aggregate amount of natural gas that can be stored at the existing facility, as well as the amount of natural gas that can be withdrawn from and injected into storage, in order to satisfy market demand for additional storage capacity and storage-related services.
The Spindletop Expansion Project includes 10 new 5500 hp (4103 kW) Caterpillar G3616/Ariel compressors and associate equipment. Adjacent to the new compressor building, GTS will construct new gas dehydration, process measurement, and gas heating systems.
