Burckhardt Technology For German Hydrogen Storage Project

Burckhardt Compression (Burckhardt) will supply a high-pressure oil-free hydrogen compressor for the H2 Cavern Storage Transition (C2CAST) Etzel project in Germany. The compressor will be equipped with Burckhardt’s cloud based UP! Detect condition monitoring system.

Introduced early this year (see “Detecting Early Signs Of Compressor Failure,” July 2025 Gas Compression Magazine, p. 18), UP! Detect is a cloud-based digital condition monitoring system that uses vibration analysis to predict potential failures. AI algorithms are leveraged to identify anomalies in compressor operation. Alerts are sent in real-time to maintenance personnel about potential issues in components. By analyzing vibration data over time, it provides actionable recommendations to help teams plan ahead, extend compressor uptime, and optimize productivity.

The H2CAST Etzel project is an initiative aimed at converting existing gas storage caverns into large-scale hydrogen storage facilities. It plays a central role in supporting the hydrogen economy and achieving Europe’s energy transition goals.
