Caterpillar Compression For Trailblazer Conversion

Trailblazer Pipeline Company LLC (TPC) and Rockies Express Pipeline LLC (REX) request authorization from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for TPC to abandon approximately 392 miles (631 km) of pipeline and related facilities, and for REX to construct, install, own, operate, and maintain various pipeline facilities and booster compression stations to allow continuity of flow for TPC. The purpose of this project is to allow the companies to move forward with a new project that will result in more efficient use of existing pipeline facilities and related capacity across both of their interstate pipeline systems as part of the Trailblazer Conversion project.

The project’s abandoned facilities include one gas-fired compressor station and two electric compressor stations totaling 60,000 hp (44,760 kW), and one interconnect that has no firm service. The pipeline will be repurposed for carbon dioxide transportation service.

Compressor Station 601 in Logan County, Colorado, will be abandoned in place, including two gas-fired compressor units totaling 20,000 hp (14,920 kW).

Compressor Station 602 in Lincoln County, Nebraska, will be abandoned in place, including two electric motor-driven compressor units totaling 20,000 hp.

Compressor Station 603 in Kearney County, Nebraska, will be abandoned in place, including two electric motor-driven compressor units totaling 20,000 hp.

As part of the application, TPC seeks authorization to lease capacity on the new REX facilities as well as REX’s existing interstate pipeline system. The work associated with the new REX facilities include expanding the existing TPC/REX Lonetree interconnect from 400,000 to 902,000 Dth/d, constructing eight pipeline taps to connect with the TPC system, installing five booster compressor stations with eight compressors totaling approximately 7800 hp (5819 kW), installing regulation equipment at three locations, constructing an 18.8-mile (30.3-km), 20-in. (0.5-m) lateral from the REX system to the Adams and Heartwell points on TPC, constructing a 22.2-mile (35.7-km), 36-in. (0.9-m) lateral to connect from the REX system to the TPC East point on TPC, and installing ancillary facilities such as main line valves and launcher facilities.

Hereford Ranch Compressor Station in Weld County, Colorado, will house one Caterpillar 3516J compressor unit and one Caterpillar 3508J compressor unit totaling 2070 hp (1544 kW).

Redtail Compressor Station in Kimball County, Nebraska, will house one Caterpillar 3516J compressor unit and one Caterpillar 3508J compressor unit totaling 2070 hp.

Logan Compressor Station in Logan County will house one Caterpillar 3608 compressor unit and one Caterpillar 3512J compressor unit totaling 3535 hp (2637 kW).

Sedgwick Compressor Station in Sedgwick County, Colorado, will house one electric motor-driven compressor unit rated at 50 hp (37.3 kW).

Sedgwick East Compressor Station in Sedgwick County will house one electric motor-driven compressor unit rated at 100 hp (74.6 kW).
