ABB has been awarded an order by Bechtel Energy Inc. (Bechtel) to deliver integrated automation, electrical, and digital solutions for Phase 1 of the Rio Grande LNG facility (RGLNG Phase 1) in Brownsville, Texas, a project developed by NextDecade Corp. Bechtel is undertaking construction of RGLNG Phase 1 under an engineering, procurement, and construction contract.
RGLNG Phase 1 includes three liquefaction trains and supporting infrastructure. This order marks ABB’s first fully-integrated scope on a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility. When operational, Phase 1 of the facility is expected to produce 17.6 million tons per annum of LNG.
RGLNG Phase 1 will utilize ABB products and services including automation control systems, digital electrification components, and industrial drives.
Earlier this year, Bechtel awarded Baker Hughes an order to supply three main refrigerant compressors for RGLNG Phase 1. In total, Baker Hughes will supply six Frame 7 gas turbines paired with 18 centrifugal compressors across Rio Grande’s first three LNG trains in a parallel configuration arrangement, for a nameplate capacity of 17.61 MTPA. The Rio Grande LNG export terminal will occupy 750 acres (303 ha) along the northern shore of Brownsville Ship Channel in Cameron County, approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the Port of Isabel and 10 miles (16 km) east of Brownsville.
Enbridge will build, own, and operate the Rio Bravo Pipeline to supply natural gas to Rio Grande LNG. Upon completion, the Rio Bravo Pipeline will transport up to 4.5 Bcf/d (127.4 x 106 m3/d) of natural gas from the South Texas Agua Dulce supply area to Rio Grande LNG.
