CCS Systems For Rio Grande LNG Terminal

Previously, Rio Grande LNG (Rio Grande) submitted a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) application to construct its Rio Grande Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal. The approved facilities include five natural gas liquefaction trains, each with a nominal capacity of 5.4 MTPA for a total nominal capacity of 27 MTPA; four full-containment LNG storage tanks, each with a 6.4 million-scf (180,000-m3) net capacity; two LNG carrier loading berths and one 1500-ft.- (457.2-m-) diameter turning basin; truck loading and unloading facilities; and appurtenant facilities.

Rio Grande is now applying for a limited amendment to incorporate a carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) system into the approved design and operation of the Rio Grande LNG (RGLNG) Terminal. The purpose of incorporating the CCS system into the RGLNG Terminal is to capture at least 90% of the RGLNG Terminal’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and provide foreign markets with a significantly less carbon-intensive source of domestically produced LNG.

With this expected reduction in CO2 emissions, the RGLNG Terminal will increase the national CO2 emissions by just 0.0001%. The CCS system will primarily consist of flue gas cooling, a CO2 absorber, an amine regenerator and reboiler, CO2 dehydration, CO2 compression, and a hot oil system.
