WM, formerly Waste Management, more than doubled its renewable natural gas (RNG) production during the first nine months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, putting the company on track to reach its goal to double RNG production year-over-year. WM continues to progress on its strategic investments in recycling and RNG facilities that drive economic and environmental value. During the quarter, four growth projects commenced operations, including new RNG facilities in Texas and California, a new recycling facility in Texas, and a recycling automation project in California.
In April, WM said that it had completed eight out of 20 planned RNG facilities and 27 out of 39 planned recycling facilities and intends to open additional sites in 2025 as part of its enterprise-wide investment plans. The additional facilities opened in the third quarter make good on that promise, bringing total RNG projects completed to 10 out of the original 20 planned facilities and total recycling automation and new market projects completed to 31 out of the original 39 planned.
The growth in RNG production is a key part of WM’s broader strategy, which includes over US$3 billion in sustainability investments from 2022 to 2026. WM said that 2026 will be the year where it fully powers its natural gas fleet from its own RNG production.
With over 12,000 trucks running on compressed natural gas, WM operates the largest natural gas fleet of its kind in North America. Achieving 100% RNG fleet utilization would create cleaner, more sustainable operations, bringing WM closer to reaching its longer term environmental, social, and governance goals.
