Everllence will supply a steam turbine-generator train to Yara’s plant in Poppendorf near Rostock, Germany. The unit will convert process steam from nitric acid production into electricity and feed it into the plant’s internal power grid. This will increase the site’s energy efficiency and reduce the fertilizer plant’s carbon footprint.
At its Poppendorf site, Yara produces a range of fertilizers for the agricultural sector. Nitric acid production is a highly exothermic process that generates a considerable amount of heat, which is used to produce steam. This steam currently drives two Everllence compressors in the nitric acid plant via two existing steam turbines. In the future, the exhaust steam leaving these turbines at a pressure of 174 psi (12 bar) will be routed to the new Everllence steam turbine-generator train. There, it will be expanded to 58 psi (4 bar) and used to generate electricity. At full load, the unit will process up to 75 metric tons of steam per hour. The electricity generated will be fed into the plant’s internal grid and used to operate the production facilities at the site.
Everllence’s scope of supply comprises a MARC4 steam turbine-generator train with an output of approximately 13.5 MW, including the generator and control system. The steam turbine will be manufactured at Everllence’s facility in Bengaluru, India. Within the company, the site has global responsibility for steam turbine power-generation solutions with outputs of up to 45 MW.
The MARC4 steam turbine will be designed in accordance with the requirements of the API 612 industry standard. This includes additional design and quality inspections as well as a mechanical test run on Everllence’s steam turbine test bed in Bengaluru, which was commissioned in 2024.
In addition, the generator train will comply with the German grid connection requirements set out in VDE-AR-N 4120. Working closely with Yara, Everllence conducted several dynamic electrical simulations to ensure the unit can be integrated safely into the plant’s power grid and in full compliance with the applicable requirements.
