Guardian Pipeline LLC (Guardian) has requested US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) authorization for its Guardian 3 Expansion Project (G3 Expansion Project) in Illinois and Wisconsin.
The Guardian Pipeline was originally built in 2002 to bring new natural gas supply to the Upper Midwest. The pipeline was expanded in 2008, extending it over 100 miles (160 km) north to serve growing populations.
The G3 Expansion project will expand the pipeline to meet the growing energy needs of the Upper Midwest. The G3 Expansion Project includes approximately 68 miles (109 km) of new pipeline loop, installed in parallel to the existing Guardian Pipeline right-of-way in Illinois.
Also included are modifications to Guardian’s existing Joliet and Sycamore compressor stations, a new compressor station in Dodge County, Wisconsin, and a new interconnect with a local natural gas utility in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.
The project will add approximately 537,000 dekatherms per day of new, firm transportation capacity, targeted for a November 2028 in-service date, pending regulatory approvals. Following two binding Open Seasons in 2025, Guardian secured long-term commitments from five local utilities for 100% of the project capacity.
Joliet Compressor Station involves the installation of two 11,110-hp (8288 kW) centrifugal compressor units and installing new compressor appurtenances such as gas cooler, unit controls, fuel gas skid, electric fuel gas heater, compressor unit silencers and electrical controls.
Sycamore Compressor Station modifications include rewheeling one centrifugal compressor unit and installing hot tap connection to the existing pipeline.
Eden Compressor Station will be a new compressor station in Dodge County that will include one 9000 hp (6714 kW) electric-drive compressor.
