Burckhardt Compression (Burckhardt) will provide three Process Gas Compressor API 618 systems for the compression of hydrogen within the liquefaction process at a hydrogen liquefaction plant currently under construction in South Korea.
Burckhardt is supplying the hydrogen liquefaction plant with three compressor systems, including auxiliaries, with a shaft power of 6.6 MW per compressor. The compressors will be used in parallel for higher liquefaction capacity and to increase the pressure of the supplied hydrogen from atmospheric pressure up to 841 psi (58 bar).
When completed, the new installation will be the largest hydrogen liquefier plant in the world, capable of producing 13,000 tons of liquefied hydrogen annually. Hyosung Heavy Industries (Hyosung) and Linde Group are building the plant. The two companies signed a contract on February 5 to set up two joint ventures — Hyosung Hydrogen, a liquefied hydrogen sales company, and Linde Hydrogen, a production company.
Under the contract, Linde Hydrogen will build and operate the hydrogen plant in Ulsan, South Korea. Hyosung Hydrogen will build charging infrastructure, including about 120 charging stations across the country, in time for the completion of the liquefied hydrogen plant.
The first phase of the project is expected to start operations in 2023.
